No matter what you need to organize (crammed closets, piles of papers, jumbled junk drawers...) a few simple steps will help you STOP clutter.
Every organizer has a favorite process or acronym (SPACE, STACKS, SHED…). No matter what name you apply, the concept is simple: give priority placement to things you love and use most, and get the rest of the stuff out of the way.
My current favorite phrase is "STOP the clutter". Here's how:
Sort – Take inventory of what you have. Pull everything (yes, everything!) out of the space and group similar items together ("like with like").
Toss – Now that you can see everything you have, ask yourself “Do I use it?” “Do I need it?” “Do I love it?” If you answer no, let it go. Free up space by donating, selling, recycling or tossing items that don't make the cut.
Organize – Assign a home to each item, keeping “like with like” (things you use together should be stored together). Focus on ensuring the things you use the most are the easiest to access.
Put away – Invest in containers, shelves, bins, boxes, labels and/or whatever you need to make grouping and retrieving items easy.
Congratulations! Enjoy your organized, functional space!
