CASE STUDY : I'LL SHOW YOU MINE IF YOU SHOW ME YOURS

Clients often ask about my closet.  It seems fair that I share my space with you if you are going to share your space with me.

Florida closet - a work in progress as I figure out my warm weather wardrobe.

Hats and bags as decor? Yes, It’s Florida!

I don’t love hot weather, but I am beginning to embrace festive Florida footwear.

A little peek of NYC makes me smile.

CHALLENGE

City girl who loves cold weather moves to Southwest Florida AND shares a closet with her husband for the first time in almost 20 years. Yikes!

We needed to make our short-term rental apartment workable without making big investments in products we might not need in our future home.

SOLUTION

Streamlining, space planning and a trip to the Container Store maximized space and saved me from investing in additional furniture and/or external storage.

LESSONS LEARNED

1) Clear the Clutter - Get rid of anything you don't love or use.  Think about the 3 F's and let things go if they don’t FIT, FLATTER and make you FEEL good.

2) Go vertical - Organizers tend to say "white space is wasted space."  Adjustable shelves, wall hooks and bins utilize available space from floor to ceiling.

3) Ensure frequently used items are easy to access -  My beloved cashmere, boots and winter coats (the few who made it through the semi-heartbreaking streamlining process) are in underbed storage drawers awaiting their chance to be worn on a trip up north. More formal and business attire are in the harder-to-reach corner.

4) Group "like with like" - Grouping pants, skirts, sweaters, blouses, shoes, etc. together makes it easier to see what you have and find what you need.

My husband’s section… yes, a few of my shoes encroached into his space.

Folded clothing, casual shoes and costume jewelry fill the nook and empty wall by the door.
